Pittisporum tobira 'Nanum' is a dwarf form of what is commonly known as Japanese mock orange or Australian laurel and is a native of China, Japan and Korea. Small evergreen leaves on fine twigging, this strong vigorous shrub is perfect for training as bonsai. By far the best feature of this plant is it's copious little white summer flowers that have the most beautiful strong scent we have come across in any flowering shrub. Keep this variety in full sun and water very well in summer, they drink a LOT. In winter pittisporum are hardy down to -5 C. Keep the soil fairly dry in winter and if very low temperatures are imminent move to a greenhouse. Prune hard after flowering, removing old discoloured leaves at the same time.  Re-pot in late spring when required after flowering and a good prune. Soil needs to be well drained but moisture retentive. Pittisporum will not do well if their soil is constantly wet.

Collected in southern Italy. A fantastic example with a large trunk and superb nebari A little wire over summer will dramatically improve the shape of this tree. Several years in this pot and growing strongly.

Planted in a plastic nursery pot.
