Laburnum Flowering Bonsai Tree

Laburnum are as rare as hens teeth in bonsai. This unusual old tree came from a collection we purchased a few years ago and Graham has been hiding it away ever since. We are busy making space for new stock and so he has reluctantly decided to let it go to a new home. 

We don't know a lot about the trees past other than the fact it's been in a bonsai pot since the early 1990s. You will notice the foliage looks poor in our images, that's thanks to a raging hot summer and the hard work of a couple of caterpillars we missed. Soon the leaves will drop for winter.

Laburnum is a member of the pea family. Obviously the outstanding feature of laburnum bonsai is the incredible bright yellow flowers borne in pendulous leafless racemes in spring, which makes them very popular. Laburnum flower readily, no special pruning or cultivation is required, just good husbandry and plenty of sun in summer. Laburnum could be compared to wisteria in some respects. Graham reckons this beats those hands down.

The tree measures roughly 18" tall overall including it's pot and 18" wide overall.

Planted in an unglazed Japanese stoneware bonsai pot.
