Buxus sempervirens is a U.K native. Perfectly suited to Bonsai cultivation box are slow growing compact dense evergreen trees that require a minimum of attention in order to look good all year round. Fully frost hardy in the U.K. Tolerates shade well. There are two main types of Buxus commonly available. In bonsai circles these are referred to as Northern or Southern Box. Whilst the Northern box has tiny leaves and finer twigging it is unbearably slow growing. The southern type has larger leaves and is very fast growing. Typically it is possible to create a presentable bonsai from raw material within 3-5 years using southern box. Box are best re-potted mid summer and we have found a mix of 50/50 akadama and chipped bark works wonders. When re-potting always remove all traces of old field soil by washing. Only prune box towards the end of summer. too frequent pruning severely weakens this species.
Graham and Rammon collected this beautiful old box a few years ago now. It spent a few years in a private collection before coming back to us. It's growing stongly and really only needs scissor pruning to develop it's shape. All the hard work is done. You will NOT find a better or more impressive box for sale anywhere even close to this price.
