Thymus vulgaris is native to southern Europe from the western Mediterranean to southern Italy. The tree typically colonises dry barren hillsides on thin alkaline soils. Thyme is supremely tolerant of hot dry and and windy exposed conditions. We know very little about cultivating this variety in the UK but have seen them growing wild in some remote parts of southern England. In keeping with most Mediterranean species winter care primarily involves providing some protection from inclement weather and excess wet. This is particularly important with thyme and rosemary as the bark is so delicate and the deadwood is not overly robust. Winter cold does not seem to be a serious problem, we have seen these trees happily siting in -5 Celcius without harm (so long as the root system is not overly wet). Because thyme is so brittle bonsai shaping is achieved by pruning, primarily in summer, thyme can be cut very hard and will still fill out rapidly.
When re-potting thyme a solid rootball should be left in tact around the trunk base and this is just cleaned around the outside and should be put into an alkaline substrate such as our Medium Grade Pumice. In the UK thyme are best re-potted from mid June to mid July. Thyme MUST HAVE an alkaline growing medium. Thyme is also tolerant of being pot bound and so re-potting is very rarely required. Flowers appear in summer. Only fertilise thyme sparingly with a product like Green Dream Ex Fish and only when the tree is in active growth.
This thyme was collected in Southern Italy and has a whole middle earth fantasy epic thing going on. Delicate, fragile and utterly beguiling. Everything there is to love about Mediterranean trees and thyme in particular is right here. Very well established and growing strongly and beginning to assume a style all it's own.
