Acer palmatum is the classic Japanese maple for bonsai cultivation. Completely frost hardy, vigorous and very tough. The delightful and delicate leaves can create the most breathtaking display of colour in autumn. Keep the tree well watered in summer and fertilize regularly throughout the growing season. Protect from strong winds when in leaf. Best autumn colour is achieved if the tree is kept in full sun.
Repot every 2-3 years using Kaizen Bonsai No2 Bonsai Soil Mix.

This tree is the cultivar 'Shishi-gashira'. A variety that is not on everyone's radar, it's extremely rare. The variety has dense stout deeply cut leaves that are borne on very short stems and can almost resemble a conifer at a quick glance. In good years for autumn colour 'Shishi-gashira' turns vibrant orange. As simple to cultivate as any maple but very slow growing. In 25 years of keeping bonsai we have only had a few small examples of this variety. An interesting hollow trunk shohin sized three with a greta nebari. Lots of potential for the future.

10" tall above it's pot. 8" wide overall. 4" diameter nebari.

Planted in a plastic nursery pot.
