Musk Scented Maple Flowering Bonsai Tree
This plant is commonly known as "Musk Scented Maple", however this is in fact not a maple at all. Japanese authorities have definitively categorised it as being from the Verbenaceae family and its specific name is Premna japonica. I would also personally challenge the musk scented part. When the tree is pruned it gives off a slightly unpleasant odour not unlike frying bacon!
However despite this confusion it is a very beautiful little tree and one of the finest grown for small bonsai. In cultivation it is very simple and can be treated much like Chinese elm or trident maple. It grows very well in a fine moist soil and tolerates full sun to shade. It should be re-potted every 2 or 3 years. A little winter protection under the bench or in a cold greenhouse will ensure the tree gets away quickly in the spring. Flowering needs some warmth to initiate, and appears on current seasons growth. The tree has very attractive yellow autumn colour.
From a private collection this exceptional little premna is ready for the show bench right out of the box.
10" tall above it's bonsai pot. 14" wide overall. 4" diameter nebari.
