Here we have a super healthy dwarf procumbens juniper perfectly suited to training as bonsai. If you were to grow from seed or cutting it would take several years to reach this stage! The trees have single trunks about the size of a finger as pictured and can either be pruned and wired for shape now or allowed to grow on in open ground or larger pots as you see fit. These plants are exceptionally strong and will develop very quickly given the correct care. Procumbens is often called Japanese garden juniper and is native to Kyushu Island Japan. It is a great variety to train as bonsai or a valuable addition to a Japanese style garden thanks to it's fine dense growth habit.
Cultivating juniper trees is very simple. Procumbens juniper is frost hardy across the U.K but will appreciate protection from freezing winds and excessive wet in winter. Giving a little overhead protection will ensure your juniper gets away quickly in spring and produces it's best in summer. Throughout the growing season position in full sun in an open spot. Juniper foliage is thick and heavy and will drink a lot of water if exposed to long uninterrupted periods of hot sun so be sure it does not dry out. Repotting should be infrequent see our Bonsai Repotting Guide. Use our No2 Bonsai soil for smaller trees.

Pruning Juniper foliage is best done in late summer. Fertilizing juniper is also very easy, use our Green Dream Bonsai Fertilizer or Ex-Fish Bonsai Fertilizer throughout the growing season.
