Portuguese Oak Yamadori Bonsai Tree
Quercus faginea, the Portuguese Oak, is a species of oak native to the western Mediterranean region in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. It occurs in mountains between 0-1900 meters altitude, and flourishes in a variety of soils and climates. It is a medium-sized deciduous or semi-evergreen tree growing to 20 m tall, with a trunk up to 80 cm diameter, with grey-brown bark. The tree can live as long as 600 years. The leaves are glossy dark green to grey-green above, and variably felted grey-white below; the margins have 5-12 pairs of irregular teeth and resemble small holly leaves. Leaf fall is typically in mid to late winter.
This oak is very well suited to bonsai cultivation. It has tiny leaves, fine twigging and great bark quality. The species is vigorous and develops quickly. The tree responds well to pruning and wiring in summer. Keep faginea in full sun in summer and protect from excessive wet in winter. Repot rarely just as new growth appears in late spring.
THE MOVEMENT OF OAKS INTO THE UK HAS, TO ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, RECENTLY BEEN STOPPED SO WE WON'T BE SEEING ANY MORE OF THESE BEAUTIFUL TREES. A massive and spectacular oak collected in Spain. We had this on offer last year but no takers which gave Graham the hump somewhat. Over winter he spent a couple of hours on the tree and the result can be seen in our pictures. It's early days but it's plain to see where this amazing piece is going. A huge stout trunk with spectacular bark and great movement. Early days but with it's amazing trunk this tree is guaranteed to develop into an absolute classic. At this price you are stealing the tree!
