Paper Bark Maple Bonsai Material

Acer griseum

The paper bark maple is a native of species found in many Chinese provinces and typically appears at altitudes above1500m, therefore it’s a tough variety that is entirely impervious to anything the UK climate can throw at it. Rare in bonsai cultivation in the UK, probably because it is not readily available in garden centres. Cultivating this species is extremely simple, it can be treated just like our native field maple (Acer campestris). A vigorous tree that grows strongly and can be pruned several times over a typical summer. Regular pruning will increase the density of ramification which in turn reduces the leaf size. If wiring is required this should be done in summer when the branches are at their most flexible and will stay in place very quickly. From a young age the tree will develop it’s characteristic copper coloured flaking bark, it also has spectacular autumn foliage which can include red, orange and pink tones.

Re-pot every 2-4 years using our No2 Bonsai Soil mix. Do not be tempted to put this acer in too small a pot as this will dramatically retard it’s growth. Feed heavily throughout the growing period using Green Dream Original Bonsai Fertilizer.
