Mugo Pine Cascade Style Bonsai Tree
Mugo pine just has to be the toughest variety of pine used in bonsai. It's natural habitat is clinging to the tree line high in the Alps where it can withstand the INCREDIBLY cold and hostile winters and dry summers. It survives the constant battering of wind, snow, avalanches and rock falls be being incredibly flexible. Mugo pine appreciates free draining soil and lots of water and full sun in summer. In winter it can take care of itself! Repot infrequently (3-5 years, 10 years + for mature trees). Feed well using a good quality organic fertilizer like Green Dream Bonsai Fertiliser. Wiring and styling work can be carried out from mid-September right through to spring. Do not pinch candles on mugo, prune new growth back by up to half in August. Mugo produces copious back budding if it has a healthy root system in good quality soil.
From a private collection this beautiful mugo pine has spent decades in a bonsai pot that we know of (and maybe many more). We know for a fact that this tree goes back to the 1950s and was grown by an old Norfolk nurseryman who's father came across bonsai in China between the wars. This tree can be enjoyed as it is or refined to a high level with detail wiring. Mugo pine come from the high Dolomites and European Alps where you will see ancient examples growing over rocks that look exactly like this little stunner. We have seen a lot of more impressive twisted mugo pines but we have not seen a more refined and mature example as bonsai. Don't expect to ever see another bonsai like this one!
