Myrtle Bonsai Material - Myrtus communis
Myrtle is a relative stranger to bonsai cultivation in the U.K. However it is a rewarding species to use and responds incredibly well to training. Fully hardy in milder areas of the U.K. Myrtle is an evergreen shrub that grows very quickly and develops into fine bonsai in pretty short order. Spring growth will be stronger if the tree is overwintered in a cold greenhouse. Give the tree a little winter protection from extreme wet and cold and it will grow profusely all summer long. The tree has small very attractive shiny leaves and fine twigging, red flaky bark and a tendency to form live veins. Always remove old leaves just as you see spring growth getting under way. In summer it produces little white flowers that eventually form black berries. The wood is very good for carving, jin and Shari work. Myrtle like full sun and lots of water and feed. Only repot every 3-5 years into a mix of akadama and bark.
REPOTTING SHOULD ONLY BE DONE IN SUMMER when the tree is actively growing.
Collected in Southern Italy and now more than two years in this pot. This tree has loads of character and will make an excellent and unusual bonsai in a very short time.
