Miniature Orange Citrus Bonsai Tree
Citrus trees come in almost infinite varieties. Identifying each type can be a nightmare but at least one thing is for sure, they can make fine bonsai trees. As far as we can tell this lovely little tree is Calamondin, Citrus mitis. It bears beautiful and strongly scented flowers in spring. The fruits, which look like very small tangerine oranges, ripen in the following spring. The tree has nice fine twigging and small evergreen leaves.
Citrus like to be kept warm year round and appreciate strong direct light. If kept cool over winter (4-12 Celsius) they may lose some of their older leaves, if kept warm they are fully evergreen. Citrus grows very well in summer and should be allowed a good run before pruning back for shape. Keep very well watered when in active growth and fertilise well. When dormant allow the soil to remain just a little drier than normal, this will help prevent root rot. Repot once root bound in the pot and watering becomes difficult. Repot in spring as new growth appears. Akadama has proven to be a very successful growing medium for citrus in the UK. Citrus are a simple and very rewarding tree to grow as bonsai.
