There really isn't anything easier to cultivate as bonsai than juniperus squamata. A native of the Himalayas and China, from northeastern Afghanistan east to western Yunnan in southwestern China. Will grow almost anywhere so long as it's in very good light. Will stand extremely low temperatures in winter and high temperatures in summer. With minimum effort this juniper variety produces beautiful dense foliage pads. Keep an eye out for tiny white scale insects and only repot every few years in late spring. Bonsai does not get simpler than this.
This is probably the best juniper of this variety we have had in the last 10 years. The quality of work that has been done on this tree is second to none. The branch structure is excellent and the foliage density is better than any example we have seen. Beautiful trunk dimensions, nice jins and a superb nebari. The tree needs a little tidying up and a good clean by which time it will be ready for the show bench. An exceptional tree at a good price the like of which you will not see any time soon!
Planted in a very nice unglazed stoneware bonsai pot by Bryan Albright.
34" tall above it's bonsai pot. 21" wide overall. 7" diameter nebari.
