Here we have a super healthy young Japanese white pine perfectly suited to training as bonsai. The variety is 'Negishi' which is very compact with unusually tight foliage. This makes developing a compact bonsai very easy. If you were to grow from seed or cutting it would take about 6-8 years to reach this stage! The trees have good sized single trunks and can either be pruned and wired for shape now or allowed to grow on in open ground or larger pots as you see fit. The plants we have are exceptionally strong and will develop very quickly given the correct care. White pines of this type are regularly available with wired trunks and planted in bonsai pots for in excess of £95. Save yourself a lot of money and do that yourself!
Japanese five needle white pine just has to be the best pine variety for bonsai. Fine dense foliage. Incredibly hardy and very forgiving as long as the soil is not allowed to remain too wet. Keep in full sun and outside all year round. Fertilize sparingly using Green Dream Bonsai Fertiliser. If the foliage develops a yellow colour this is almost always down to excessively wet soil. Some overhead cover to avoid this can be beneficial in winter.
