Sophora japonica, commonly known as Japanese pagoda tree is a delightful and interesting species of deciduous tree that, despite its common name, is native to China, although is widely planted in Japan. It was introduced into the UK in 1753 and won the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2002. Until now we have never seen sophora used as bonsai.
The foliage of the Japanese Pagoda Tree is bright green, with compound pinnate leaves that have very small leaflets that give the tree a light and airy appearance perfectly suited to bonsai. Once mature, the tree produces yellow-white, pea like flowers that hang in racemes, they are similar to False Acacia flowers, with just slightly smaller petals. In the autumn long grey seed pods are borne that are held on the tree throughout the winter. Once mature sophora produce nice craggy bark.
Sophora is winter hardy in the UK. When planted in the ground it will easily withstand -15 celcius though in pot cultivation some protection below -5 Celcius would be wise. In summer keep in a south facing position in full sun in order to see the best prformance from the tree. Fertilise well but do not allow to remain waterlogged for long periods. Re-pot once the tree becomes pot bound using our No2 Bonsai Soil and incorporate Green Dream Soil Source into the mix. Branches can be shaped with wire if required during the summer.
Sophora has much Chinese folklore associated with it. The Chinese name actually being composed of the words “wood” and “demon”. In 1644 AD, Emperor Chongzhen, the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty, is said to have hanged himself from a pagoda, as his palace was overtaken by peasants during a revolution. Maybe we should palnt one outside the houses of parliment ;-)
This beautiful and impressive bonsai is extremely rare in the UK, last time we offered one it sold within a couple of hours. Imported from Indonesia over winter 2017. There is a very little wood carving to do and some ramification to develop. An absolutely unique opportunity to obtain a very rare and special bonsai tree.
