Japanese flowering hawthorn bonsai tree
Crategus cuneata - Japanese hawthorn.
This wonderful hawthorn variety is little known in the U.K. In bonsai cultivation it can be treated exactly as our native monogyna variety. The tree likes full sun and lots of water in summer and is fully hardy in winter. Cuneata is possibly a little faster growing, has a more rounded leaf form and needs re-potting slightly more frequently. The real magic of this variety is in it's amazing willingness to flower every year. In May you can expect loads of medium size white flowers that fade to pink before producing copious numbers of large red berries in autumn.
Recently taken in PX this hawthorn appears to be a little weak and could do with two or three years in a large nursery pot and allowed to grow freely in order to recover it's strength. We removed a layer of dead bark from one of the trunks recently hence the slightly incongruous white streak. This will obviously blend in given some time. Overall a beautiful craggy old bonsai that just needs a little patience and skill to bring it back and continue it's development. Priced accordingly.
23" high above it's bonsai pot. 26" wide overall. 8" diameter nebari.
Planted in a high quality Japanese Glazed stoneware bonsai pot.
