Hackberry Bonsai Material

Celtis australis, commonly known as European nettle tree, Mediterranean hackberry, lote tree, or honeyberry. A great species for training as bonsai and fairly rare in the UK. The tree has a beautiful fine dense ramification when mature. Foliage is a nice pale grey green with leaves that resemble stinging nettles. Celtis have nice pale grey bark that develops texture with age. This variety is unusual in bonsai, the Chinese variety Celtis sinensis is much more common, this type is considerbly more robust than it's Chinese cousin.

Celtis is a fully hardy species that can be kept outside all year round in most areas. However we recommend a little winter protection in colder areas and during periods of extreme cold. A little shelter in a cold greenhouse or under a bench will ensure the tree emerges in spring unscathed. In summer keep in full sun and water very well. Celtis like a lot of water in summer but can be kept fairly dry over winter. When growing feed very well using Green Dream Bonsai Fertiliser. Re-pot every two or three years using our No2 Bonsai Soil Mix.

Collected in Spain. Chunky hackberry stump carving project priced to clear. Would benefit from being slip potted into something larger for a couple of years.

20" tall above it's bonsai pot. 17" wide overall. 8" diameter nebari.

Planted in a plastic bonsai pot.
