Details

Probably the first time you will have seen this species and to the best of our knowledge the first time it has been offered for bonsai in the U.K. Most people are familiar with the 'Brown Turkey' fig, often seen in gardens here. This is however a dwarf form of that plant with nice small compact leaves ultimately less than 25mm across. Having cultivated this species on our nursery for a few years now we know it's frost hardy to at least -5 Celcius.  Otherwise the tree is very simple to grow and train. Keep in full sun, water and feed well in the growing season. Re-potting should be done every 2-4 years in spring as the beds begin to unravel. Our No2 Bonsai soil is an ideal planting medium for hardy figs. Fruits are borne from previous seasons flowers, remove part formed fruits in autumn. In spring fruits develop from the base of previous seasons swollen flower buds.

A massive powerfiul fig that is going to make a belter of a bonsai tree. Ficus carica take on a very gnarly craggy appearance as they mature. There is a fair bit of detail carving to do on this tree which primarily consists of hollowing out old cuts. Ficus wood is soft and quickly rots and so it's not suitable for making jins and the like. An extremely unusual tree and outstanding value for money. Small flowers are followed by edible figs. Leaf size reduces dramatically as the ramification density increases.

20" tall above it's bonsai pot. 24" wide overall. 12" diameter nebari.

Planted in a plastic bonsai pot.
