Details

At a best guess we believe this to be Quercus ilex Subsp: Ballota, commonly called Barbary oak. Oaks hybridise readily and exact identification is not always easy. This oak is native to large areas of Spain and the primary tree in many areas of scrub forest. It occurs in mountains between 0-1900 meters altitude, and flourishes in a variety of soils and climates. The leaves are very small dark green to grey-green above, and variably felted grey-white below; the margins have irregular teeth and resemble small holly leaves.

This oak is very well suited to bonsai cultivation. It has tiny leaves, fine twigging and great bark quality. The species is vigorous and develops quickly if kept warm in summer. The tree responds well to pruning and wiring in summer. Keep in full sun and protect from excessive wet in winter. The tree is frost hardy so long as the soil is not waterlogged. We prefer to keep this oak under cover in winter to protect the bark and deadwood from damage by being wet for weeks on end. Repot rarely just as new growth appears in late spring.

This beautiful oak was collected in Spain and is now very well established and rooted having been on our nursery for the last three years. Stunning bark and great big nebari make this an outstanding piece of material. Some initial work was done on primary branch structure a couple of years back and these are now beginning to thicken well. An absolutely beautiful and imposing tree even at this early stage.

37" tall above it's pot. 40" wide overall. 16" diameter nebari.

Planted in a plastic nursery pot.
