Here we have some superb chunky European olive trees perfectly suited to training as bonsai. If you were to grow from seed or cutting it would take several years to reach this stage! The trees have single trunks and are a great beginners project, there's a little carving required (hand or power tools) and the trees are perfect for a first wiring and styling and in summer they can be transferred into bonsai pots. Watch Graham's videos, do a few sketches and get to work!

These trees are frost hardy down to below -5 Celsius outdoors but will do equally well in a cool greenhouse or indoor space that's not too warm over winter. In summer olive needs to be kept outside well exposed and in full sun at all times. Given correct conditions these trees will bear little yellow flowers in spring followed by olives in late autumn. To ensure the best rate of growth water and feed well in summer and keep a little dry in winter. Repotting should be infrequent see our Bonsai Repotting Guide. Use our No2 or No3 Bonsai Soil. All work on olives is best done in summer once the new shoots have hardened off. Fertilising olive is also very easy, use our Green Dream Bonsai Fertilizer or Ex-Fish Bonsai Fertilizer throughout the growing season.
