English Hornbeam Yamadori Bonsai Material
Carpinus betulus
Native to the U.K carpinus is a principle woodland species that can make a very big and majestic tree which is exactly what this beautiful bonsai does. In bonsai cultivation the tree prefers a little protection from the sun in summer and will thrive in very light shade. Completely hardy in the U.K Hornbeam is a very simple and robust tree that is rewarding to care for and train as bonsai. Hornbeam does not need to be re-potted quite as often as other deciduous varieties. Throughout summer regularly remove large leaves and those that either hand down or grow inwards.

This powerful hornbeam has been on our nursery for a few years now and last winter Graham finally got around to working it. All the hard work has been done including two re-pots since collecting which means a nice compact and shallow root system ready for a future bonsai pot. Some deadwood can be refined and the ramification needs time to develop but this beautiful tree will reward the time given to it. An outstanding example of one of our finest native trees.
