English Elm Native Bonsai
Ulmus procera. Much sought after and one of the U.Ks finest deciduous species for bonsai the English elm is a great and rewarding tree to grow as bonsai. (see Colin Lewis's book The Art of Bonsai Design).
Procera is fully hardy in all parts o the U.K and grows vigorously thus allowing fast development. For young trees in the early stages of development it is best to re-pot every year into akadama. This will keep the trees vigour high. Mature trees can be left two or three years between re-potting. Autumn will see the tree put on a splendid display of yellow colour before leaf drop.
Graham had a bit of a spell a couple of years back and took an elm root cutting that has resulted in this bonkers little bonsai tree. No wiring or shaping has been done, just regular pruning so far. We doubt you will turn up anything quite like this anywhere. Developing fast and beginning to show great promise.
8" tall above it's pot. 11" wide overall. 7" diameter nebari.
