English Elm Native Bonsai
Ulmus procera. Much sought after and one of the U.Ks finest deciduous species for bonsai the English elm is a great and rewarding tree to grow as bonsai. (see Colin Lewis's book The Art of Bonsai Design).

Procera is fully hardy in all parts o the U.K and grows vigorously thus allowing fast development. For young trees in the early stages of development it is best to re-pot every year into akadama. This will keep the trees vigour high. Mature trees can be left two or three years between re-potting. Autumn will see the tree put on a splendid display of yellow colour before leaf drop.

When it arrived we really didn't know what to do with this unusual old elm. There is only one small live vein on one side and the rest of the trunk is deadwood. At the time the tree was twice this height. Graham cut out all the rotten wood and air layered the live part which quickly rooted strongly. The whole thing was then dropped into this pot. There is only about an inch of deadwood in the soil which will help prevent further rotting. What remains is looking pretty tough and with care and regular treatment we think this should all survive in tact for a very long time. There is still a little further carving and hollowing required. Some of the branches have old wire marks and a few lumps and bumps. This is an unusual tree and a challenging project but if you posess the skills this can be developed into an eye catching bonsai tree. In light of the above we have priced this tree to sell.
