Dwarf Japanese Black Pine Bonsai
Pinus thunbergii kotobuki
The ever popular Japanese Black Pine has a strong rugged character unsurpassed by any other tree in Bonsai Cultivation. Completely hardy in the U.K. fertilize and water sparingly and keep in full sun and well exposed to the elements. Protect from winter wet. Only re-pot infrequently when growth slows down as the soil compacts.
We would suggest that in general Japanese black pines only re-pot every 3-10 years depending upon pot size. Use our No3 Bonsai Soil Mix and only repot once active growth starts. Cut back new growth hard in Late July, this will encourage vigour in the tree as well as producing copious back budding. Feed very well from July onwards until late autumn. We highly recommend our Ex-Fish bonsai fertilizer for feeding black pine.

The big problem with pinus thunbergii, Japanese black pine, as bonsai is always the long needles that are almost impossible to reduce significantly in the UK. However that's not a problem with this dwarf foliage variety Kotobuki. The needles are naturally small, typically about 25-35mm long. The variety also has a very compact habit. This is THE ultimate variety of black pine to cultivate as bonsai and is much sought after which means it typically commands a higher price than it's much courser cousin.

Imported from Japan over winter and now with new growth beginning to come through. Superb small shohin sized dwarf foliage black pine with a fat trunk and no pruning scars. Perfect for styling and developing further as shohin bonsai trees.
