Crepe Myrtle Yamadori Bonsai Material - Largestromia indica
Crepe (or crape) myrtle is a relative stranger to bonsai cultivation in the U.K. However it is a rewarding species to use and responds incredibly well to training. The RHS state hardiness to H3 (down to -5 Celsius) however in a pot we would suggest overwintering in a spot where temperatures are not allowed to drop much below freezing just to be safe. Once frost risk has passed largestromia can go outside in full sun and will grow like a weed. Shaping with wire works well over summer. Largestromia is not fussy about it's soil mix and will pretty much grow in anything as long as it holds plenty of water.
This big hollow tree was collected in Southern Italy and has been here for a couple of years now and is growing like crazy. Re-potted this spring just a couple of years should see this developing very nicely.
Planted in a plastic bonsai pot.
27" tall above it's pot. 19" wide overall. 12" diameter trunk base
