Common Juniper Evergreen Bonsai Tree
Juniperus communis has the widest geographic range of any woody plant. As a result it is an incredibly diverse variety with almost infinate forms.
Fortunately cultivating common junipers is much easier than identifying them. Common juniper is incredibly frost hardy almost anywhere on the planet and will shrug off a British winter like it never happened.Throughout the growing season position in an exposed bright spot in full sun. Juniper foliage is thick and heavy and will drink a lot of water if exposed to long uninterrupted periods of hot sun. This can result in a very dry pot when you get home! In worst cases the tips of the new growth can be lost. So a little dappled shade and protection from high winds will ensure the plant always grows well and looks it's best at the height of summer.
Repotting should be infrequent see our Bonsai Repotting Guide
Fertilising Common juniper is also very easy, use our Green Dream Bonsai Fertiliser or Ex-Fish Bonsai Fertilizer throughout the growing season but apply sparingly. Common juniper naturally grows on impoverished soils.
Common juniper quickly develops nice dense foliage pads with regular pruning. This variety forms little buds all along new shoots, cutting back to these often ensures a dense foliage formation.
A nice little shohin sized juniper with an interesting curved trunk that's coming together quickly.
Planted in a glazed bonsai pot.
