Buckthorn Native Bonsai Material
Rhamnus cathartica
Commonly known as buckthorn, the rhamnus family consists of approximately 100 species of shrubs and small trees. Adapted to growing in very hostile environments rhamnus makes fantastic bonsai that tolerate exposed dry conditions in summer. Fairly insignificant flowers are borne in clusters at the ends of the branches in spring. These are followed by small red/black berries. Buckthorn should be re-potted infrequently and only once they become very pot bound. The variety appreciated full sun in a very open exposed position.

Collected locally this is the only example of this variety we have seen in 30 years. Previously bare rooted and growing strongly. This tree would benefit from some shaping with wire over winter.

Planted in a plastic nursery pot.

16" tall above it's bonsai pot. 16" wide overall. 8" diameter nebari.
