Breaking Wave – Mugo Pumillio

September 2007. Just arrived from Italy. This incredible old twisted pine was collected at nearly 10,000 feet up in the Dolomite mountains. Incredibly hostile weather and strong winds can sculpt the very best bonsai material. Even though this tree could be 400 years old it is strong and healthy.

Pumillio is a naturally occurring dwarf form of the common mugo pine (turra). After nearly five years in a growing box the tree is fighting fit despite it’s great age.

February 2008. The tree recently styled at a demonstration for the RHS. The old wooden box fell apart so the tree was moved into a teraccota pot temporarily.

Spring 2009. With the foliage thinned and some dead bark removed the bonsai begins to appear. It reminded me of a wave breaking against rocks.

    Mr. Potter,

I watched one of your videos on youtube.com and was really impressed with your vision and bonsai. I once took a class with John Naka and have not seen such vision since that time. Please let me know if you ever decide to cross the pond and visit the States.

    Best,

    Jon
