Blackthorn Flowering Native Bonsai Tree Material
Prunus spinosa or blackthorn is one of the U.K's finest native species to cultivate as bonsai. The tree has very small oval leaves, little white flowers in early spring and purple fruits in late summer. The tree develops very fine ramification in time. When old blackthorn also develop beautiful jet black craggy bark. Finding good blackthorn for bonsai is not easy, their natural suckering habit produces masses of thin straight shoots, normally only with roots a long way from the trunk. Blackthorn are fully frost hardy and prefer to grow in an exposed position. Re-pot every 3-4 years with a moisture retentive soil like our No1 Bonsai soil mix. A very simple tree to cultivate and train as bonsai.
A chunky blackthorn already in a small pot. Growing very strongly and well established having been previously bare rooted. Perfect for first work this autumn.
Planted in a plastic nursery pot.
