Black Cherry Plum Flowering Bonsai Material
Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra' also known as Prunus 'Pissardii Nigra' is probably the best prunus species to cultivate as bonsai. The tree has small oval leaves that vary in colour from very dark green to deep purple depending upon sunlight exposure, the more light the darker the colour. Best of all the tree is simply covered in stunning pink flowers that appear from their deep pink buds just before the leaves emerge in early spring. The tree develops very fine ramification in time. As it ages this prunus also develops beautiful black craggy bark just like it's close cousin blackthorn. Prunus are fully frost hardy and prefer to grow in an exposed position. Re-pot every 3-4 years with a moisture retentive soil like our No1 Bonsai soil mix. A very simple tree to cultivate and train as bonsai even for beginners
In thirty years of cultivating bonsai this is the first time we have had this stunning variety. We have a small number of these which we will not be able to replace once they are sold, we bought the whole lot. Miss these and the chance will be gone, it could easily be another thirty years before you see another
