Details

A relative rarity in bonsai cultivation almond is a very simple tree to care for outdoors in the UK. Prunus dulcis is a close relative of peach trees and part of the same family as blackthorn etc'. Native to the middle east, India and north Africa almond is also widely cultivated in Mediteranean regions. Almond grows best in Mediterranean climates with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The optimal temperature for their growth is between 15 and 30 °C. Almonds need a long cool period over winter. In the UK we recommend overwintering in a cool greenhouse where the tree can be protected from excess wet and but can still be cold. In summer keep in a south facing position in full sun as warm as possible to achieve best growth. Almonds do well in our No2 Bonsai Soil Mix but rarely require re-potting, they do well in a fairly root bound condition so long as the pot used is not too small. Almonds should have a winter wash with a copper based fungicide in February to avoid problems with peach leaf curl. Almonds are primarily developed by pruning but can be shaped with a little wire during the growing season. In spring almonds freely produce absolutely beautiful scented flowers.

A beautiful craggy old hollow almond tree rescued from an orchard in Spain. Well established and growing strongly. A considerable amount of work has already been completed on this great little tree, if fact all the hard work is now done.
