Acer ginnala - Siberian Maple, Amur maple....... One of the rarest maples seen cultivated as bonsai trees. As it's common name might suggest this is a very tough tree indeed and thrives in the British climate both winter and summer. In pot cultivation the species has a nice small leaf which is three pointed with an irregular toothed edge. The best thing about the Siberian maple is the absolutely spectacular vibrant autumn colour. If kept in full sun all summer the autumn colour is perhaps the best of any maple variety.
Over the years we have seen a handful of this variety as bonsai but nothing to even come close to this craggy old fella'. Purchased from a private collection over winter. Our first impressions of the tree were not good until we gave it a good clean and prune and pulled off all the shaggy moss and dead leaves. Underneath all of the detritus was an absolute belter of a tree. For a start the trunk is actually hollow, it has great bark and displays real age. On top of that is a head of craggy branches that form a quite unique broom style bonsai tree. If you have a good eye and skill with maples we think you will recognise what a little diamond this tree is. Shown here just coming into new leaf.
20" tall above it's pot. 25" wide overall. 6" diameter nebari.
Planted in an unglazed stoneware bonsai pot.
