Portuguese Oak Yamadori Bonsai Material
Quercus faginea, the Portuguese Oak, is a species of oak native to the western Mediterranean region in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. It occurs in mountains between 0-1900 meters altitude, and flourishes in a variety of soils and climates. It is a medium-sized deciduous or semi-evergreen tree growing to 20 m tall, with a trunk up to 80 cm diameter, with grey-brown bark. The tree can live as long as 600 years. The leaves are glossy dark green to grey-green above, and variably felted grey-white below; the margins have 5-12 pairs of irregular teeth and resemble small holly leaves. Leaf fall is typically in mid to late winter.

This oak is very well suited to bonsai cultivation. It has tiny leaves, fine twigging and great bark quality. The species is vigorous and develops quickly. The tree responds well to pruning and wiring in summer. Keep faginea in full sun in summer and protect from excessive wet in winter. Repot rarely just as new growth appears in late spring.

Well established and ready for working this oak has great potential and quite remarkable bark quality. This tree needs a change of angle when re-potted. There is a large area of natural shari that needs a little carving and refining. This variety is best worked in late summer or early autumn.
