Details

Satsuki Azalea Bonsai Tree
Japanese Satsuki (pronounced sat-ski - refers to the month of flowering in Japan - May) azaleas are the ultimate flowering bonsai trees. Every year without fail they put on a spectacular display of colour.

When it comes to cultivating satsuki as bonsai (in the U,K) a few simple rules need to be adhered to. As with all plants the satsuki's needs are basic and simple but unless they are met the tree will suffer. Many people have experienced problems cultivating this species in the U.K...mostly because of bad information they have received. No1 priority for azaleas is humidity. In Japan the summer air is saturated with moisture whereas in the U.K the Summer air is normally very dry.
Keeping the tree in a sheltered (from strong wind) spot (dappled sunshine) surrounded by other plants and preferably water (a pond) is really going to help the tree to do well. A major mistake often repeated is to put the tree into a greenhouse in winter, again this is normally a very dry environment. Satsuki are more than capable of dealing with a cold English winter, winter temperatures in Japan are much lower than here. Expect the tree to shed some leaves in winter. Otherwise all is simple...fertilise well using an organic product like Green Dream Ericaceous Bonsai Fertiliser. Twice a year water satsuki with an iron supplement such as Crystal Specialist Mono - Iron. We recommend re-potting at the end of March and not 'after flowering' using our No2 Bonsai Soil Mix. Only re-pot when the soil is almost entirely solid. Simply cut about 20% or the rootball away and return to the pot with new soil beneath and around it. Raking out in the conventional way may cause the death of the tree.  Our experience has proven this plan of action works very well in the U.K. Lastly in order to maintain a satsuki bonsai in good health and to develop the tree well we recommend removing all of the flower buds in February every third year.

Imported from Indonesia over winter 2017 these azaleas are a little coarser in their growth than some Japanese varieties but grow at twice the pace. If you have had trouble growing Japanese satsuki in the past this strain is about twice as robust, we have found it to be indestructible over the last few years. A big azalea at a bargain basement price. The tree has an excellent dense head of branches that will benefit from some work to improve it's shape and structure over summer with a little wiring and pruning. A massive base and multiple trunks with exposed roots and possibly some small areas of deadwood. Beautiful deep cerise pink flowers. We were lucky to find a few of these squirreled away in the back of a European nursery. Fantastic azaleas and the best value pound for pound available anywhere.

Planted in a glazed stoneware bonsai pot.
