Olive Yamadori Bonsai Tree - Olea Sylvestris.

Olea sylvestris is a small leaf variety of olive tree native to Mediterranean regions. It is prized for it's small leaf form and also it's vigorous growth and fast development. Olives are incredibly robust trees that are perfect for bonsai cultivation. They can be pruned, re-potted and worked with all the usual bonsai techniques and will not blink an eye providing the work is completed in SUMMER. Many people have concerns about the hardiness of olives. Having cultivated this species in the U.K for a number of years we can say with authority that olives are completely frost hardy to -10 Celsius. The significant factor that needs to be considered in the U.K is that of soil. Olives are extremely tolerant of dry conditions. Over the winter here the combination of cold and wet in the roots can cause a problem. Therefore it is essential to use a very open soil with a particle size of not less than 6mm. Using our No3 Bonsai Soil will ensure long term drainage and your olive trees will thrive. Re-pot every third year in summer whilst actively growing. Olives like plenty of sun and will thrive in a hot sheltered south facing corner. In summer water freely and feed heavily. In winter keeping the tree in a dry position protected from rain and the worst cold will help prevent fungal problems in the following season. Overwintering in a cold well ventilated greenhouse or conservatory is ideal.

Graham imported this olive from Sicily as a bare stump several years ago to add to his own collection. Since then nearly ten years have passed and there was never time to get the tree worked. Last summer we passed it over to Kevin Willson and he came up with this beautiful design. If you look carefully you will see areas of blackened deadwood, this is 100% natural, this tree has survived a brush fire t some time in the past. There is still some time required to fill out the foliage and plenty of scope to refine areas of the deadwood but as it stands this is probably one of the best olive bonsai in the UK today.
