It’s been insanely busy so far this year and everyone was getting a bit ragged so I declared a day off. However instead of loafing around in front of the TV, Rammon and I headed out to the woods. Sadly our collecting is pretty tame compared to what some of our friends enjoy but, we had a nice day out all the same. Here are a few of the trees we collected.

Among others there are larch, hawthorn, beech, yew, scots pine, elm and some very unusual tillia (Linden).

From what we know the pots were all made by Mr Charles Miller who was obviously passionate about his bonsai. The pots seem to have been made from the late nineties through to around 2007. There are a few unique oddities but mostly these are just beautiful pots.

Over the next couple of months the pots will be thoroughly cleaned, photographed and listed on our web site for sale. There is close to half a ton of pots so be patient

I was recently the guest of some great guys behind the Cyprus Bonsai Forum http://bonsaicyprus.forumotions.com/. We first met last year when everyone visited our nursery for a couple of days. I was very pleased to receive an invitation to visit. Because of pressure on my time I could only manage a short visit this time.

Working with Stavros, Greg and Savvas reminded me of when I started my bonsai journey 20 years ago. So much enthusiasm and so much excitement is great to be around. I felt like being around a bunch of kids, these guys have so much energy…. and so many questions… and so many plants too! That is just what it takes to succeed with bonsai and these guys will go all the way for sure.

I am amazed that bonsai does not seem to have more of a following in Cyprus. However left to my friends here the word is sure to spread and I am VERY pleased to be able to help in a small way.

Thanks for a great weekend guys and for your ongoing support it was a privilege and an honour to be a part of your journey and hope to be back soon.

Kaizen Bonsai have spent years developing some very unique soil mixes. These help produce bonsai in double quick time. Our soil mixes encourage profuse rooting which in turn produces exceptional top growth.

Today we re-potted a hawthorn collected two years ago. This is a very old tree collected from a dying hedgerow. When we potted it two years ago it only had a teaspoon of root.

The tree was planted in a deep pot in our No1 Bonsai soil mix.

After just two years LOOK AT ALL THOSE ROOTS!

Two years ago this tree had no roots and no branches. A combination of good soil and good fertilizer (Green Dream) have put this ailing tree on the road to becoming bonsai.

It’s been a while since our last movie post. Finding time to do these is getting increasingly difficult. Our latest offering was shot on Christmas day!

I decided to take a look at the subject of refining deadwood since I had received several requests asking how I approached this.

I am not particularly happy with this one. I started with over an hour of footage and so the final result was a little too pared down for my liking.

Bonsai mart began producing paper mail order catalogues way back in the very early nineties. Back then the internet was in its infancy and this is how business was done. We have continued with this tradition until now.

Producing a catalogue takes about 5 months of work and costs enough to pay someone’s wages for about the same amount of time. Last year (2011) we had to agonize whether to continue, not because of the cost but because things were changing so rapidly. The content of a catalogue has to be finalized by the beginning of August and needs to be current for the better part of the year and in these uncertain times this is just not possible. Prices are rising, suppliers are disappearing and shipping costs and government taxes are rising faster than we can keep pace.

Having spent over 20 years working in the printing industry I love paper and ink and feel that the inexorable move to online retailing, whilst convenient, leaves us a little worse off. After all who doesn’t love browsing a paper whilst having a quiet sit down

Whilst not producing a catalogue didn’t affect business over the tail end of the year we do hope to get back to this old tradition very soon.

G.
